MCI4 Meditation course, introduction: formless meditation

MCI4 Meditation course, introduction: formless meditation by Suvannavira

Looked at the body breath metta
Can call them active practices
Active means something we try to do
Concentrate on the body the breath
Develop metta

Now we will do receptive practices
We aren’t trying to do anything
We are trying to be receptive

To practice meditation
To continue practicing
To get real benefits from practice
We need to balance active and receptive practices

In the early days of the order people did active practices
Emphasis on getting concentrated
On breaking through / overcoming hindrances

Some started to get more dissatisfied
Started to experiment with receptive practices
Tried just sitting
Remember sleeping thinking dry concentration
Danger just sitting = drifting
(Sinking and drifting)

Meditation without form
Arrive at question
What are we trying to do in receptive practices?

We are still trying to do something
Only we don’t decide what
That’s why it is formless
It doesn’t have a form or structure
No stages
No object

Rather no specific object
Or everything is our object
We try to be as aware as possible
Aware of everything
Aware of anything that happens
Aware of thoughts sensations images
Aware of smells and sounds

Two ways we can do this practice
Try to be aware of everything all at once
Or just let our attention / awareness go where it wants.
Our awareness / attention is always changing its object of awareness

So if we start thinking, try to be as aware as possible of our thought
Start feeling, try to be as aware as possible
Of sounds, as aware as possible

Like watching internal tv
So we are being active
Just not doing anything
Or rather our doing is watching
Watching without control
Being receptive to everything that is happening

DO IT

What did we focus on?
Thoughts sensations images sounds

Try to bring this receptive quality into other practices
Into life
How to do that? Ask them what they think

We can just sit as well. When?
1/ before starting meditating, when we feel restless
2/ after meditation, called sitting on when we are already concentrated
3/ on retreat when already concentrated

TRY JUST SITTING NOW OR AT END OF CLASS - 2 minutes

One more thing. Doing nothing
Helps us develop receptivity too
Spend some time each day doing nothing
Not reading thinking watching your phone etc ….
10-20. Get a cup of tea. Comfortable chair. Do nothing.
Waste time
Don’t get too strict, don’t make doing nothing into something!

Bring receptive quality into all meditations
And everyday life
A good balance to always being directed by thoughts
Of always having something to do

End of course
Now four more
Four weeks on each of these practices
To go deeper into them
To respond to your experience as you start to practice them regularly

MCM 2/4 – meditation course middle level – the body

MCM 2/4 – meditation course middle level – the body

Review

Started looking at mindfulness of body

Leaving the world of ideas

Arriving in the body

what emerges with that

Any thoughts observations during the week?

This week looking in more detail

At world of ideas

Stories, personal myths, collective myths, identity, strategies, beliefs

That build our sense of self

Our character

Who we are

In fact not so much leaving the world of ideas

As adding to the world of ideas

By an awareness of the body

Adding to our sense of self

But we can add to our sense of self

By better understanding ourselves

By becoming more aware of ourselves

We can do this by analysing ourselves

Before I start just mention Anatman

You might be thinking about Anatman

The doctrine of no self

Well known Buddhist teaching

But this teaching is the negation of Hindu idea of Atman

A fixed permanent separate self

Uniquely in control of its destiny

Buddha said such a self doesn’t exist

Challenged anyone to find such a separate self, that you can point to,

this is me, this is unique to me, and this is not found anywhere else in the universe

In their experience as they meditate

So we can talk about the self

Sangharakshita talks about the empirical self

The self we experience

What’s more this self can change

It is how it is on the basis of conditions

Change for the worse or better

Depending on how we act

Being clear about who we are helps us change for the better

So we can analyse the self from different points of view

1/ logic reason facts knowledge

My age

Nationality

Sex

Family

Profession etc …

2/ symbols, myths and legends, beliefs, сказки

The great Russian soul

Religion

Сказки

Stories that have moved us etc …

So reason and emotion, we can group the different things together as reason or emotion,

Rational knowledge

Emotional knowledge

But there is a third category

3/ direct experience, an the intuition that arise in dependance on it

This is usually less developed

Mindfulness of the body helps us develop it

Our direct experience can sometimes be in conflict with the other two.

We might think all Germans are orderly.

A German is before us

He might not be orderly.

So direct experience can modify our ideas and emotions.

That’s why analysis of our direct experience is important.

We can develop our ability to access direct experience

Do this by mindfulness of the body

What is our direct experience?

DO THE PRACTICE

and report back

WHAT NEXT?

What discrepancies can we discover comparing rational and emotional knowledge with direct experience?

1/ in the stories we tell

Things we repeat to ourselves

Become our identity

have an emotional force

Always strengthening it by repetition

Basis if relations to world

Or we try to forget something or someone,

Try to ignore them, and we lose part of ourselves, leads to weakness,

wholeness is strength.

Could be positive

But often negative

A Russian woman friend often talked about Russian men

Women in love

2/ in beliefs

I follow such and such religion

This is how my religion tells me to treat my wife

And who makes certain choices

Regardless of what I think is best

3/ plans and strategies

Ideas that we follow

Maybe from psychology

Good to keep strong boundaries

Idea of simply being the strongest

The cleverest

The richest

The most beautiful etc …

Let’s call it winning all the time

Q which has the strongest influence on you

Stories beliefs strategies winning

Are you satisfied with living like that

If not why not?

MCM ¼ - Meditation course, middle level – the body

MCM ¼ - Meditation course, middle levelthe body

Entering the world of the body!
Mindfulness of body is foundation of all meditations. Why?

What it is not: Bells, mantras, chakras, yoga, getting what you want, my meditation is…,

In general meditation is:
Raising level of awareness
Higher state on consciousness (not Krishna consciousness)
Understanding > wisdom (and compassion).
Value of communication for developing our awareness

How do we raise our level of awareness?
Not a big abstract?
Give more attention to specific objects,
Open up to things we usually ignore.

Start with being more aware of the body
And leaving world of ideas.

Ideas are valuable.
Basis of human civilisation.
Sets us apart from the animals.
But by themselves they limit us.

We receive ideas about ourselves from:
Parents, school, friends, CMI from different countries.

Different theories, religions, therapies.

Ideas like what’s cool and not cool,
Good to be independent,
Good to love your family,
Strong people never cry etc ….

Q What are our ideas about ourselves?
Ideas can include plans and strategies.
Q Are they enough?

They are limited because don’t include all of us.
Start with awareness of body.
Sensations in hand different from idea of the hand.

What do we get from being more in touch with the body?

Pleasure
Energy
Stability
Confidence
Relaxation
Contentment
Положительные эмоции
Physical dexterity

But awareness also opens up other parts of our experience.
Simply sitting eyes closed and being aware,
opens us up to other aspects of our experience.

Bits gets hidden or ignored.
We often try to ignore responses that are painful,
Or we don’t know how to deal with.
Or try to forget them.
And we lose energy.
We’ll come back to this theme later.

Or maybe sexual attraction to a married woman.
Выход есть?

1/ get in contact with more parts of ourselves.
Useful mindfulness of the body to do this.

2/ get into relationship with these parts of ourselves.
Called integration in psychological sense.
Energy gets freed up.
We don’t really know what they are.
We fear them, like a wolf at the door.
Our unconscious mind.

3/ change our relationship to these parts of ourselves.
When they’ve come to light.
We have reclaimed their energy.
We’ve become whole.
We are able to concentrate.
We can act with energy and power.

So this is what we’re trying to do.
Trying by meditation practice in general
And by starting to give more attention to our body.

The purpose of this course is starting to practice in everyday life.
What can we do?
A/ practice the mindfulness of the body meditation each day.
B/ try to maintain awareness of the body throughout the day.
This is very difficult.
C/ have times when we focus on the body.
Not a coffee break but an awareness break.
D/ look to enjoy simple activities performed with awareness.
Feeling the sensations in the feet, With each step.

Try all these next week. We’ll start with a review of what you did, And what effects did you feel.

Next week we’ll look more at the ideas,
The world we are trying to leave.
1/ stories we tell ourselves.
2/ ideas we have about ourselves and others.
3/ where these ideas about ourselves place us in hierarchies.
4/ our identity. Who we believe ourselves to be.
5/ the strategies we use in life, the habits we cultivate.

Enough for now.

How to do a retreat at home over the New Year’s holidays?

How to do a retreat at home over the New Year’s holidays?

Firstly, what is a retreat?

It’s a time dedicated to existing more than doing.

The New Year’s holidays are an ideal time to do a retreat at home.

But it is easy to fill up all our free time.

How to keep our time free?

Switch off your phone, it can feel like a great relief.

For necessary communication, switch it on a few times a day, morning and evening.

Let friends and family know what you are doing.

Better to arrange meetings for tomorrow not today,

so you know you have the day for the retreat.

Some meetings can be put off till after the holidays.

Alcohol – best avoid it altogether, to feel brighter and clearer.

Sex – try having some time without any sexual stimulation, see what it feels like.

So now we have kept our time free, what shall we do.

Meditate each day, mornings and evenings.

Let experiencing your inner world be your activity.

Have time to do nothing.

Avoid stimulation, give time for simple pleasures.

Spend time simply looking at something.

Take time to do one thing at a time, just drink a cup of tea.

Watch what is happening around you, how the leaves on the plants are?

Have time to reflect, about the past year and the year ahead.

Sometimes being with painful memories in times of peace and warmth can be healing.

Whatever we give our attention to leaves an impression on us, it creates our karma, choose it wisely.

If you have fond these reflections useful,

why not pass them on to friends and family with a repost,

so they can benefit from them too?

Notes on teaching the Metta Bhavana meditation

Notes on teaching the Metta Bhavana meditation

About me; meditation 1990, OM in Triratna 1994, teaching 2002

Practice of meditation; like a musical instrument, states of mind and qualities, enlightenment

-- Capable of new experience we can’t now imagine, we often limit ourselves, need faith, intention

-- And need to be rooted in current experience, discover who we really are,

Hidden by; controlling our emotions, avoiding pain, ideas about ourselves, external activity

Working on yourself; means how we change;

Developing an emotionally and positive concentrated state of mind not by wilful suppression of unpleasant emotions and escaping unpleasant feelings but by:

-- Choosing to focus on the positive not the negative

Developing our awareness to be able to make those kinds of choices.

Not on autopilot.

Means we can take responsibility for our mental and emotional states.

Not blame others for what we feel.

-- Leads to states of openness, receptivity, love and compassion

Which allow positive, creative communication and improved relations

In conflicts capable of keeping positive states, aware and concentrated

Thinking quickly to make good decisions

Why continue coming?

How to practice in everyday life, how our everyday lives support our meditation

Единомышленники, spiritual friendship, support

Hindrances arise over time, after a few months and 10 years ….

Spiritual development is a long path, many stages, different needs later

Highest development of meditation is E, path to E is called the Dharma, essence of Buddhism

Triratna; international Buddhist community practising together

While meditating;

What happens to the experience of your body, your feelings, emotions, thoughts while meditating

What are the effects, changes

We can share experiences afterwards

Tip, don’t spend the while meditation thinking about it

Emphasis, exploring experience and discovering change

Meditation

Sometimes when I am teaching, I tell people that I have never met someone who has meditated, even for a little while, who has said they can fully express their experience to someone who has never done it. (I started regularly teaching meditation in 2002, after having already practised it for twelve years). Since then I have probably taught over 1500 classes. And no one has ever contradicted me, saying they have been able to. But even if we can not fully express our experience of meditation, can we at least say something about it?

What is meditation?
Even this is a difficult question, since there is no one thing which we can call meditation. We only have a large number of meditation practices, coming from different religions, countries and cultures, that have been developed and practised over many centuries. Perhaps in Russia the best known of them involves meditating on the “Chakras” or energy centres. It comes from the Hindu tradition. Or at least that is what most people ask about when a conversation starts on meditation.

So what are the meditation practices I teach?
They are the “Mindfulness of Breathing” and the “Development of Loving Kindness”, and both are widespread in the teachings of Buddhism. However, they can both practised on their own, so you don't have to be a Buddhist to practice them and they are accessible to people from any religion.

The “Mindfulness of Breathing”.
In the “Mindfulness of Breathing”, while sitting upright and alert yet comfortable, and with our eyes closed, we simply pay attention to the breathing as it naturally enters and leaves our body. The practice has four stages, and with each new stage we are asked to be more alert and focussed with our awareness. With our eyes closed, we withdraw from our usual sensual experience so as to become more aware of the riches and complexities of our inner world, including that which psychologists would call the “unconscious”.

So what has been the effect of having regularly practiced this meditation for the last quarter century? Again, it is difficult to answer, partly because during that time I have done various meditation practices, and ethical observances, with each having their effect. However, certainly two qualities immediately come to mind.

Firstly is the ability to simply sit, to quietly and happily sit with a relaxed and aware state of mind, and to be interested in and very alive to what is going on around me and within me. When I do this in public, people often tell me, “don't be bored” не скучай. Maybe they only feel fully engaged and interested in fleeting moments of high pitch excitement? If only they knew the riot of feeling and impressions that I might be experiencing while quietly sitting there.

Secondly is the ability to think deeply. This might surprise some. After all don't many who come to meditation classes say they want to stop thinking, having heard that meditative states are states without thought. It is true, higher meditative states are states where the rational mind has ceased to function, but we can't simply force ourselves to stop thinking to get there. There are meditative states where thinking and reflection are present, and concentrating on our thoughts is one way by which we can attain them. What I sense most people really want to stop, when they talk about stopping thinking, is the underlying negative mental states that accompany their thoughts, like like restless and anxiety, and of which the thoughts are mere expressions.

The “Development of Loving Kindness”.
In the “Development of Loving Kindness”, we again sit upright and alert yet comfortable, with our eyes closed, but this time we turn our attention to other people, selectively turn out attention to them. Selectively here doesn't mean to select certain people at the expense of others, because in the last stage of the practice we develop loving kindness to all living beings without exception, rather selectively to certain aspects of our experience and focus on them. The practice is based on the principle that 'what we give our attention to grows', so we consciously decide to focus it on the positive aspects, for example, peoples positive qualities and our good memories of them, rather than the bad. This doesn't mean being naïve and simply ignoring the bad qualities, rather letting what is positive be more prominent and have a stronger effect on us, which in turns helps us feel happier and be more positive in our relations with others.

As well as being more aware of their positive qualities, I found the practice helped me simply become more aware of other people, in all their depth and complexity. In this regards there is something I have to admit ... All my life I have been rather convinced of my own specialness and uniqueness, even if others never saw it. What I learned through doing this meditation was that everyone else, yes everyone, deep down was the same. They all saw themselves as special and unique and were looking for others to recognise it in them, just like I was.

There are many other things this practice has taught me. One of them was to be interested in uninteresting people, and like unlikeable people. Another was that if I wanted to be able to be genuinely kind to other people, I had to learn also to be kind to myself. The meditation practice starts with the development of loving kindness to ourselves.
Out of the two meditation practices, the “Development of Loving Kindness” was the one I never wanted to do, so perhaps it is not surprising that persevering with it was more beneficial.

So after all these years, what advice would I give to those wanting to start meditating? Keeping going and don't be in a hurry to change practices.

Keep going!

Maybe you will have good meditations when you start, and maybe you won't. But what is certain is if you really try to meditate, you will have many days when it will be hard going, where you will feel nothing is happening, you have returned to square one, or got even worse than when you started. Don't be despair! That is part of the process, it happens to everyone. While doing the “Mindfulness of Breathing” maybe you begin to see just how distracted you really are, and while doing the “Development of Loving Kindness” maybe you see how much you are irritated, hate and avoid people. You never noticed it before because you were not aware enough to do so.

Don't be in a hurry to change practices!
Many who come to my classes learn the two meditations and then say, 'ok I got that, what's next?'. It is all too easy to go round collecting practises from different teachers. Soon you'll be able to impress all your friends by talking about all the interesting things you know … But if you want to find water underground, you will need dig a deep hole in one place, not a series of shallow holes in different places, and the same goes for finding the treasures which meditation can reveal, even if there is water in many, many places.

Happy digging!

Развитие осознанности:

WELCOME

Theme – developing awareness and kindness by means of meditation, this week it is awareness.

INTRODUCTION

Our name, why we came, one sentence,

I am Suvannavira, Buddhist name, I am a Buddhist

No religion, I wanted to make these classes accessible to all.

PREPARATION to today's meditation, the Mindfulness of Breathing.

Preparation, is very important, if we prepare well we are almost meditating in the real sense of the word.

PRINCIPLE: If we want to be able to focus our attention, we need to have a relaxed and broad base of awareness.

So we will start by developing these two qualities, a broad base of attention and relaxation.

IMAGE: sitting like a mountain, broad base, very still, small tip.

BROAD BASE OF EXPERIENCE means all of ourselves,

both in terms of all aspects of our direct experience and all sides of ourselves.

SOUNDS: starting with a broad experience outside ourselves, the sounds in the room and beyond.

BODY: the whole of our body sitting here, pleasant and painful feelings, and the rhythm of the breath in the body.

FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS: just let us feel what we are feeling, pleasant and unpleasant, comfortable uncomfortable.

Don't worry, everything is normal. End on a positive note. Не вините себя.

THOUGHTS: people often coming thinking meditation is 'not thinking'. OK, now we can think, doesn't mean start thinking about something, just notice thoughts that arise, and where they go. Thinking can be a doorway to deep concentration.

ALL TOGETHER

MINDFULNESS OF THE BODY

We will now focus on the body, part by part. I will explain again this practice during the meditation.

Being aware of the body doesn't meaning thinking about it or using your imagination,

but being aware of the feelings in each part, pleasant, painful or neutral.

Being aware of painful feelings doesn't mean we need to sit and suffer, can move quietly.

INTRODUCTION

Many different types of meditation in the world, forget your preconceptions?

We teach meditation in terms of Western culture, so no Eastern words.

Meditation is a practice, we need to do it regularly to get results.

We do it to transform ourselves (in the end) completely.

Sometimes it is difficult, sometime easy and very pleasant, in both cases we just need to keep going.

It is a tool for us to work on ourselves, on our mind with our mind.

MINDFULNESS OF BREATHING

WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO DO

We try to be more aware by becoming more concentrated, when we are really concentrated we are naturally aware.

Being concentrated does not mean a forced fixation on a small point,

GOAL the natural integration of all our energies, which then flow in one direction, with stable concentration.

It can be very pleasant, pleasure can be a doorway to concentration.

HOW ARE WE TRYING TO DO IT

We work on developing awareness by keeping our mind focussed on one object.

It happens to be the breathing, it relaxes us, we just breath naturally.

And we have our eyes closed so none of the usual distractions.

STAGES OF THE PRACTICE.

So I will now explain two stages of the mindfulness of breathing.

FIRST STAGE we simply try to maintain an awareness of the breathing,

somewhere in the body, our choice where,

we can just breath naturally, not need to control our breath,

to help us stay focussed on the breath, and to help the rational mind take part,

we count after every out-breath, until 10, then start again.

If we notice we are distracted, or gone on to 11,12,13, or we have started thinking, just gently return to the breath.

The very first step is learning to simply come back to the breath, noticing when we have slipped away.

Later we can look at other ways to work in meditation.

SECOND STAGE we don't have the help of the numbers, we just try to be aware of the breath

Anywhere in the body, just somewhere interesting, allow yourself to get more interested in the process of breathing.

Look for doorways to deeper concentration: images, emotions and pleasant feelings, thoughts even.

FURTHER TEACHING, GOING FURTHER

BACK TO PREPARATION How to go further with it? Five stages:

--Поза для медитации

If our posture has deteriorated, get it back, or deal with pain points; ankles, back, shoulders, neck.

Fine tuning; rock on hips, lift hand and shoulders, rock head

Then give some time to be aware of the body again, shades into ...

--Само наблудение give yourself time to feel what you are feeling, body, emotions, thoughts, не вините себя

--Цель; Remember exactly what we are trying to do, what the practice is, qualities to develop, and not drifting.

--Энмузиазм; why you wanted to learn to meditate, inspiring people who meditate, your good meditations,

--Решимость, решительность.

We decide to really do it, wholeheartedly, not mechanically, every time like the first time, resolved not to waste time, with balanced energy, to really be in the moment.

PRACTICE AT HOME

Try to meditate every day, or 3-4 times a week; 10, 20 or 30 minutes a day.

Start with самонаблудение, Mindfulness of the Body then Development of Awareness,

how much time for each practice, learn to know what you need, how many minutes for each, and for each stage?

Helps to find a regular place and time to meditate, for it to be calm around you, switch off your phone.

Leave time free before and after, otherwise jarring.

Sometimes difficult, keep on, notice state of mind at beginning and end.

Repetition is key to success in meditation.

SO HOW CAN WE PRACTICE IN EVERYDAY LIFE?

--We can be more aware of our bodies, when we are walking, body scan in the metro rather than listen to music.

All the time, notice how we are sitting when we are working on the computer, how does it feel in our feet when we walk somewhere, letting our shoulders relax and move downwards when we feel tense.

Or just at particular moments, instead of a cigarette break, take a moment to do a quick mindfulness of the body.

--We can be more aware of our thoughts.

Give ourselves time to think, think through all those details, it will make our lives less chaotic.

Plan and anticipate rather than get in a mess.

If we experience anxiety when we think, relax, take a deep breath and that will help us think without anxiety.

We can get very concentrated through thinking especially when we are very engaged with something.

We can consider the consequences of our actions, why we sometimes feel well and other times not,

Why sometimes people are friendly and at other times not.

Next week other practice, development of kindness, then come once a month to keep up the connection.

QUESTION: HOW DO YOU KNOW IT IS WORKING?

--We notice a change in how we experience the world in our everyday lives.

--Meditation is not always easy, we all have times where they feel they can't do it, then we notice a change only afterwards.

--Sometimes straight after the sit, we think and start being absorbed.

--Our friends notice a change in us, they may not be able to say what.

--How do we know it is not working, after 4 weeks we want a new practice, we are bored, we want something more advanced.
